Saint Mary’s Legacy Garden

Legacy Garden ImageIn August of 2008, Saint Mary’s College established a half-acre permaculture garden adjacent to Claeys Hall South. Under the leadership of Garden Steward Julie Welch, the garden’s impact has been experienced broadly within our 4,800-member campus community. Designed to educate students, staff, and faculty about sustainable, pesticide-free food production, the garden also reduces the College's environmental footprint. All its food is served in the cafeteria, and campus food waste is converted into compost for the garden.

Sodexo, the College food service, hired Ms. Welch to oversee the development of the garden in exchange for the food that is produced. Over a 10-month period, approximately 500 students, faculty and staff contributed more than 1,400 hours of work in the garden--planting, cultivating, and mulching the beds, and putting a deer fence and ground cover around the perimeter. The site -- which the freshman class has named The Legacy Garden -- was formally dedicated on April 1 in a ceremony that included students, faculty and staff.
